Meditation Is My Superpower

Settling Into Stillness
Meditation has been a life saver for me several times over the years. In its’ simplest form – sitting quietly, focusing on sensations of my breath in the body, just noticing my thoughts jump around trying to distract me, then bringing my attention gently back again (and again) to the breath.

I discovered meditation through yoga classes initially. Realising I loved this part of the class (being still rather than trying tricky postures). Meditation left me with a sense of calmness and awareness about what I was really feeling and how I really am, but with a sense of quiet calm and strength that everything will be OK. I found meditation supported me when growing a business, when bringing up a family, when I had any general worries.

A TRAUMATIC LIFE EVENT

Then I had a sudden traumatic bereavement in my life. My husband and absolute soulmate suddenly passed away whilst he was away on a trip. Utter devastation. I was desperately hanging on emotionally and searching for meaning, a route to survive, and a sense that some semblance of a happy life could ever be possible for me again. The one thing that most supported me was meditation practice. During my meditations I kept getting images – of a very large old front door, of me walking out of that door smiling with a small dog, of me walking to yoga classes locally, of living close to nature. I found inner strength by meditating regularly, it almost felt like prayer.

MOVING ON

Three years after this bereavement, our old house continued to give me visual reminders of my loss every second and it was emotionally exhausting. We decided to sell our home and move away to a new town (one with parks, a river, beautiful historic properties, wide avenues). After a property search that kept coming to dead ends, we found a large Georgian home comprising beautiful apartments. As we drove in the in/out drive and stopped the car – there it was, The Door! We got ‘the feeling’ about this apartment; it was so us, homely, elegant, safe. In the interim my daughter had persuaded me to buy a maltipoo doggie – he is the love of our lives! So there I was, walking out of a large old door with a small dog. Within two weeks I became aware of a garden yoga class happening yards from our place. So now I was walking to yoga. And all this came to me via my meditation practice. We have three beautiful parks and a meadow within minutes’ walk.
Seven years on, I’m so grateful and blessed to have built a new, happy life, with a lovely Partner.

BENEFITS OF THE PRACTICE

Meditation is different every time you practice. Some days your head just takes over with thoughts and it feels like a waste of time. The experience is different every day, and for everyone. But when practiced consistently, you develop a closer connection to yourself. Your inner knowing, instincts, intuition seem clearer. Other benefits can include better sleep, less reactive to stress or conflict, more ability to pause and choose a response, increased sense of peace, improved health and wellbeing and more.

SHARING WITH OTHERS

Last year through my meditation practice I felt drawn, again, to work with others more – coaching and supporting them in identifying their vision, finding ways to navigate their lives with ease and grace so they can thrive. Meditation is now one of the bedrocks of my business and of my daily practice. I’m trained as Meditation & Mindfulness Teacher – sharing practices with people so they can find their own stillness, regulate their nervous system and connect with a life that feels authentic and happy.
